I would like to invite us to look at two women who figure prominently in the Gospels, Lazarus’ sisters Mary and Martha.  These two women and their relationships with Jesus inform us about the life of Christian faithfulness in profound ways.  Let’s listen, imagine and learn from them today.

There are only two books in the Bible that are named for women, Esther and Ruth.  The story of Ruth is all the more remarkable because Ruth was not Jewish, but a foreigner, an immigrant—a refugee.  But she was also the great grandmother of King David.  Instead of hiding this fact, the Jewish bible celebrates her.  What does she have to teach us about God?

In a society where women’s value was often based on their fertility, bearing children was a mark of divine favor, and infertility was seen as divine disapproval or worse.  It would be natural for a woman to place her whole hope on bearing a child, as a sign of her faithfulness to God and God’s favor toward her.
