Healing our View of God

Sunday, June 3, 2018

A lot of our religious training –especially when we are young—is intended to keep us in line with cultural norms that we see in religious terms.  Acting properly and predictably is helpful to a well-ordered society, and churches have long functioned to train us in this. Listen and see what Jesus thinks about this.

Healing our View of good & Evil

Sunday, June 10, 2018

What is our view of good and evil?  Often our viewpoints come to us filtered through family and society without much reflection or thought.  This can create some serious problems for us as we negotiate the tangled web of life.  We try to do what is good.  We interpret others based on our own sense of what is good and evil.  If our grasp of good and evil is even slightly confused, we get into trouble

Discovering Healing in Small Things

Sunday, June 17, 2018

We all have, at some level, a fear of suffering and death.  It is hard-wired into us.  We do not want to experience pain, anguish, grief, loss, isolation, rejection, hatred, cruelty, and death.  This operates at such a deep level that we do not notice it at work in our ordinary day to day life; but only when we face a big and immediate threat.  Then we panic, give up, or struggle irrationally against it, like wild animals caught in traps.  But Jesus has some healing for us, even in the ordinary daily events that point toward suffering and loss.

Sunday, July 1, 2018

Some of us have felt that we are seriously unworthy, bad, failures, useless, or just outcasts in society.  Some of us are fairly convinced that we are up-right and proper, doers of the right, and socially acceptable.  Some of us can flop from one to the other.  And most of tend to think that whatever we are, God has decided it is as it should be.   But Jesus has a different perspective.

Going Out with God's Healing

Sunday, July 8, 2018

It is often said that if Jesus showed up in a local church in America, he would be thrown out or at best, treated with cool indifference.  There is a great story of a new pastor who dressed up as an unclean street person and sat outside the new church, asking for help.  He was, you can be sure, ignored.  When the sermon time came, no preacher, until this fellow walked in to the gasps of the congregation.

Entering Into the Power of Healing

Sunday, July 15, 2018

The great English mystic saint, Juliana of Norwich, lived in a time of great suffering and turmoil, but she lived by a simple truth that “all is well, all will be well and all manner of things will be well.”  While we do not face the plague, we too experience a lot of suffering and turmoil in the world today.  The American people are divided as at no period since 1865 over an endless list of matters.  What does God offer us in this time?

Expanding the Reach of God's Healing

Sunday, July 22, 2018

When we hear bible texts we are invited to remember who our God really is.  If we see God as judge, task master and evaluator of everything about us, then the texts will be especially painful reminders of our failings.  However, if we allow ourselves to discover who Jesus wants us to know as our God, the Bible will show us how to experience more of God’s love and grace by opening ourselves up in new ways.
