We all have, at some level, a fear of suffering and death. It is hard-wired into us. We do not want to experience pain, anguish, grief, loss, isolation, rejection, hatred, cruelty, and death. This operates at such a deep level that we do not notice it at work in our ordinary day to day life; but only when we face a big and immediate threat. Then we panic, give up, or struggle irrationally against it, like wild animals caught in traps. But Jesus has some healing for us, even in the ordinary daily events that point toward suffering and loss.
