The letter of James offers us down to earth, practical applications of faith.  Indeed, James argues that without practice, faith itself is dead.  We are each asked to assess ourselves to see if we are indeed practicing our faith and how.  We are also invited to look at our church with the same questions.

James has warned that not many should be rule-makers, dictators of rules, judges of others, because such persons will be held to a higher standard than those that they judge.  Why? Because, he said, we all make mistakes—literally we all stumble in the pathways of life.

Pause a moment and consider yourself. Most likely, we think of some attributes of ourselves-appearance, health, occupation, values, beliefs, relationships, and roles.  Each of these is true, by in large. What is missing here? The whole person is missing from our self-images. Yes, we assume that we are the sum of the parts, but that is not really wholly who we are, and deep down we know that.
