The fruit of righteousness, according to St Paul, is love.  How often is the fruit of our lives reflected in love?  How often is it, instead, judgment, criticism, anger, worry, and fear?  Ask yourself, what is the first response that comes up within you when you are presented with another person or group of people?

Often in these days, joy is supposed to arise from wealth, power, put downs of others we dislike or fear, and generally smug self-satisfaction.  The consumer culture tells us that if we get certain gifts at Christmas we will have joy, or if we give certain gifts our loved ones will have joy.  But does consumption have anything to do with joy at all?

Peace is not the absence of war.  We know that the stress and tensions in our own relationships-- even when unspoken—can bring gnawing dis-ease in our lives.  And we know that international tensions, social tension in cities and so many other situations can bring us sleeplessness and anxiety, fear and hyper-vigilance. So what is peace?
